CREDITS FOR CARTS CATCHES ON AS CONSUMERS BECOME AWARE OF FED PROGRAM

Dallas/Ft. Worth - - - Consumers were well aware of the “Cash For Clunkers” program that allowed a hefty cash rebate for trading in energy inefficient automobiles. Consumers are just starting to become aware of a similar program for purchasing golf carts that qualify as Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV’s).

The Internal Revenue Service has ruled that plug-in electric vehicles (including many golf cart/.NEV’s) using certain types of batteries qualify for a new tax credit if purchased this year. It is a dollar-to-dollar tax credit reduction from the tax owned to the IRS, not an income deduction.

Some NEV manufacturers have taken things a step further to simplify the process for their customers with this impending end of the year deadline. For example, Star Electric Vehicles has just received certification from the IRS that offers consumers a $5335.60 federal income tax credit for purchasing one of ten qualifying Star models, and a $4,234.72 tax credit on two additional models.

For perspective, most NEVs generally retail for around $9,000. This means that qualified consumers can buy a new Star Electric Vehicle for around $2,000 - $4,000 after a federal tax credit of $5335.60.

Unlike “Cash For Clunkers” that lasted until the federal money ran out, the tax credit is available to any business or individual that has a federal tax obligation. However, the Act does have a deadline that requires the purchase and delivery to take place prior to December 31, 2009. According to the IRS a new form 8936, named Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit, will be used for this credit.

“Since Star just received certification from the IRS a few weeks ago, we wanted to make sure our customers were aware of this program. It’s important to respond early in order to take advantage of available inventory and meet the delivery deadline,” stated Jimmy Shoppa, President of Shoppa’s Material Handling.

Shoppa's Material Handling is the only authorized local Star Electric Vehicles dealer in the North/West Texas area.
